The Men's and Women's Moscow Championship Superfinals were held for two days in the Russian State Social University. These competitions have become the first in the program of the Moscow Open 2014, 10th International RSSU Cup. The official opening ceremony of the Cup will be held on Saturday Feb 1. 10 men and 10 women were competing for the prizes of the Superfinals. Half of them have received this right according to the results of the Regular Championship, another half was composed of personally invited grand masters – the strongest chess players of Moscow.
The most titled participant of the tournament, Alexander Grischuk, has become the winner of the Men's Competition. Alexander is the 2012 World Blitz Champion and multiple gold medalist of the World Chess Olympiad as a member of the Russian National Team. However, in order to achieve this feat he had not only to prove himself good over the distance, but also to win the decisive armageddon game with the white against Evgeniy Najer – both grandmasters having scored 6.5 out of 9 points.
Najer took 2nd place. Boris Grachev finished 3rd. Having 5.5 points, he won on tie-break rules over Alexander Morozevich and Ivan Popov, each having the same number of points. These players have become the forth and the fifth correspondingly.
Daria Charochkina took the win in the Women's Superfinals. In the next to last round she managed to claim the win by beating her main rival, Valentina Gunina. She earned 7 points for a half point lead at the finish.
Alexandra Kosteniuk with 6 points took 3rd place. Olga Girya had earned the same number of points and in order to determine the 3rd place winner an armageddon game was played. Kosteniuk, playing as white, celebrated the win.
The award ceremony for winners of the Men's and Women's Moscow Championship Superfinals will be held on Feb 9 in the RSSU.
